Root canal treatment

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which holds the nerve. When deep decay or a crack lets bacteria reach it, the pulp gets infected and the tooth can hurt badly.

Root canal treatment (RCT) removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth and seals it. You keep your own tooth instead of having it removed.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Toothache that wakes you at night or throbs on its own
  • Pain with hot or cold that lingers after the food is gone
  • Pain when you bite or chew on one tooth
  • Swelling of the gum or face near a tooth
  • A small pimple-like bump on the gum
  • A tooth that has turned darker than the others

How root canal treatment is done

  1. 1

    Diagnosis

Dr. Rima examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see the roots and the infection.

  2. 2

    Numbing

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic so the treatment is comfortable.

  3. 3

    Cleaning the canals

The infected pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned and shaped.

  4. 4

    Sealing

The canals are filled and sealed so bacteria cannot get back in.

  5. 5

    Protecting the tooth

A tooth that has had a root canal is weaker, so a crown is often advised to protect it.

After a root canal

  • Some tenderness when biting for a few days is normal
  • Take any medicines exactly as prescribed
  • Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final filling or crown is done
  • Contact us if swelling increases or pain gets worse instead of better

Questions

Root Canal Treatment: common questions

Ask your own question
Is root canal treatment painful?

The tooth is fully numbed during treatment. Most people find the root canal relieves the pain they came in with. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is common.

How many visits does a root canal take?

It depends on the tooth and how much infection there is. Some teeth are finished in one visit, others need more. Dr. Rima tells you after the check-up.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth usually need a crown after a root canal because they take heavy chewing forces. Dr. Rima will tell you whether your tooth needs one.

Is it better to remove the tooth instead?

Keeping your natural tooth is usually better. A removed tooth leaves a gap that may later need an implant or bridge.
