Implants & Restorations

Dentures and implant-supported dentures

Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable set of teeth on a gum-coloured base. A good denture should fit well, look natural and let you eat comfortably.

Making dentures is part of Dr. Rima’s specialist training as a prosthodontist. If a regular denture keeps slipping, it can be clipped onto implants so it stays in place.

Is this you?

Dentures may help if

  • You have lost several or all of your teeth
  • Your current denture is loose, painful or broken
  • You find it hard to chew or speak clearly with your denture
  • Your denture is old and your face looks sunken
  • You want a stable denture that does not move while eating

How dentures are made

  1. 1

    Examination

Your mouth, gums and any remaining teeth are checked.

  2. 2

    Impressions

Accurate moulds of your gums are taken so the denture fits closely.

  3. 3

    Bite and tooth selection

Your bite is recorded and the shape and shade of the teeth are chosen.

  4. 4

    Trial fitting

You try the denture in wax before it is finished, so changes can be made.

  5. 5

    Fitting and adjustment

The finished denture is fitted, and sore spots are adjusted at follow-up visits.

Types of dentures

OptionWhat it is
Complete dentureReplaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
Partial dentureReplaces some teeth and clips onto your remaining teeth.
Implant-supported dentureClips onto two or more implants so it does not slip. Removable for cleaning.

Caring for your dentures

  • Take dentures out and clean them every day
  • Clean your gums and any remaining teeth too
  • Keep dentures in water or a cleaning solution when not in your mouth
  • Come back if a sore spot does not settle; a small adjustment usually fixes it
  • Have the fit checked regularly, because gums change shape over time

Questions

Dentures & Implant-Supported Dentures: common questions

Ask your own question
How long does it take to get used to new dentures?

Most people take a few weeks to get used to eating and speaking with new dentures. Sore spots are common at first and are fixed with small adjustments.

What is an implant-supported denture?

It is a denture that clips onto implants placed in the jaw. It stays firmly in place while you eat and talk, but can still be removed for cleaning.

Can my old loose denture be fixed?

Sometimes a loose denture can be relined to fit better. If it is old or worn, a new denture or implant support may work better. Dr. Rima will check and advise.
