Dr. Rima measures the space between your teeth and gums and may take an X-ray to check the bone.

Tartar is removed from above the gum line with scaling.

Deep cleaning if needed
For deeper pockets, the root surfaces below the gum are cleaned (root planing) so the gums can heal and tighten.

You are shown how to brush and clean between your teeth in the way that suits your gums.

Your gums are checked again to see how they have healed.

Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Bleeding usually means the gums are inflamed because plaque and tartar have built up along the gum line. A professional cleaning and good brushing usually fix it.
Can gum disease be cured?
Early gum disease (gingivitis) can be reversed with cleaning and good home care. Advanced gum disease can be controlled, but lost bone does not grow back on its own.
Does deep cleaning hurt?
Deep cleaning is done with the area numbed where needed, so it is comfortable. Gums may feel sore for a few days afterwards.
